For a browser game to fare well against its competitors, it must go that extra mile. Modern war RTS Desert Operations does this by looking and acting like a PC strategy game. Having a world that you can actually see being built is much more satisfying than having to imagine it like you do in other text-based browser games. Although the time it takes to construct buildings can get pretty long, which means patience is a requirement, Desert Operations is an enjoyable and fun way to use up your spare time.
Having a graphical representation of your base is the big selling point of Desert Operations. In web 2.0 visuals are everything and people now want more than just text on a screen. Watching tiny yellow diggers carve up the land to make way for the foundations of a new university brings Desert Operations closer to games like Command and Conquer and, although the graphics are fairly primitive, it really evokes the feeling of a PC real-time strategy title.
